Candy Choir is a child’s dream. This 6-meter-high, inflated installation invites spectators to explore a hyper-colored, candy-like universe, and to see, listen and imagine.
This sound and light experience is far from static. Quite the opposite, in fact: this work is intended to be alive, expressive and, above all, reactive to its environment. Under the large arches, luminous spheres and largeformat lollipops, there are singers in pyjamas. These are equiped with audio speakers which makes them a choir.
During the first segment, a masterful 8-minute “showtime” sequence begins, showcasing the complete stage paraphernalia. The lights come up, singers raise their voices, lollipops and spheres light up and play with the inflated choir.
The second segment invites the audience into the act. Two inflated signers are set within the public zone. Every signer is equiped with microphones near their ear lobes. Guests are encouraged to say a sentence into their ear. The audio file is sent to the procedural audio software which turns it into a wordless musical sentence, respecting the tones and rythm of the guest’s sentence. The musical phrase is integrated to the onging song being performed.
The guests can recognize the tonality of their phrase and appreciate how grandiose it has become - now composited with the complete ensemble. Perfect strangers can now dialogue via the choir. The musical style varies between operatic, techno, hip-hop, etc... This segment lasts 15 minutes. This installation is aimed at the general public. Its “hypercolored” appearance is intended to fill children with wonder and make them dream, but also adults, who are offered a chance to escape and be part of an choir for a moment.
